Pet Projects: Super Stewie

Stewie (or Stewart, as I call him when he is being funny, which is most of the
time) is a bull terrier mix, about two-and-a-half years old. He has been with EHR
since the summer of 2012, so that makes him more seasoned than I, who has
been with EHR since December 2012. Stewie is from Tennessee; perhaps he
came up on a transport, but knowing his energy level, it wouldn’t surprise me if
he bounced on up here himself.

It is a mystery to me why he even is here at the kennel. One guess might be
because he is an energetic terrier who does not like people roughhousing with
him, or playing tug-of-war with him, or surprising him. He has the heart of a true
terrier and will nip under those circumstances.

Despite his energy level, he is a dog who would match well with a mellow person
who leads an active lifestyle. He needs someone who would manage how high
he can jump, which is over my head (5’ 4”). And he would benefit from someone
who understands and loves the terrier breeds.

Stewie and I met at EHR’s 2012 Winter Wonderland fundraiser. He was the first
pup I noticed because of his comedic antics in his crate. We went on our first
pack walk together in January and it was true love from then on. He has the best
smile! Stewie was so funny and active, and so sweet and snuggly that I wanted
him as my pet project.

We have only been working together for four months. We have started working
on sit and wait in his kennel before I take him out. We also work on sit and wait
when we are in the play yard, before he fetches his (deflated) soccer ball.

My goal is to start Stewie on agility. He is so awesomely smart and will excel
at it. Before his class, we run together at the dog park to burn off some of that
excess energy so he can better concentrate in class. He walks really well on a
leash, too. He listens once I get his attention and really make him focus on me.

I love this sweet, silly guy and would adopt him if I could. He loves walks, runs,
playing with (deflated) soccer balls, jumping over obstacles, being read to and
snuggling in your lap. And he gives kisses!
